Trainee Counsellors & Psychotherapists

"Your vision will only become clear when you can look into your own heart.

Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes."

-Carl Jung

As a fully accredited counsellor and psychotherapist with the BACP, I practice & abide by their ethical framework. I have a great deal of experience of

working with, and mentoring those embarking on their counselling training as they begin or continue their journey of self-exploration.

My core training in Clarkson’s Five Relational Model, which incorporates Person-Centred and Psychodynamic,

underpins my integrative approach, however, my practice is additionally informed by the Humanistic Approach,

Transactional Analysis, Gestalt, CBT, and Solution Focussed Theory.

Why Our Own Personal Therapy Journey Matters, Especially as a Trainee Counsellor

Carl Jung created the term ‘wounded healer’ when referring to psychotherapeutic clinicians, claiming our own life experiences

enable us to have a greater understanding and empathy of the struggles of others. While this may be true it is also important for

us to understand that the counselling/psychotherapeutic process is not one of ‘rescuing and fixing’, which comes from our own needs.

It is one of empowerment, understanding, and emotional growth to enable our clients to create a safe and fulfilling life for themselves.

Therefore, exploration of the ‘self’, is fundamental to our learning and professional development and

essential for us to be effective and safe practitioners.

Growing in self-awareness enables us to become aware of and better understand our own ‘drivers’, ‘blind spots’ and ‘triggers’.

Exploring our processes, prejudices, conflicts and emotional experiences and identifying from where and how they came to be,

benefits our personal development, enabling us to better understand the process between practitioner and client in the therapy room. This facilitates emotional growth and development for the client.

Undertaking your journey in personal therapy brings your theoretical learning to life with the experiential process.

It enables you to understand what it is to be a client, sitting with the discomfort of vulnerability, amongst other emotions, which can be experienced as we explore ourselves and our relationships, both past and present.

'The more you know yourself, the more patience you have for what you see in others.’

-Erik Erikson

Working collaboratively...

Counselling & psychotherapy is built on the foundation of a trusting professional relationship between counsellor and client.

As your therapist my role is not to direct you or give you answers. It is to 'travel your journey with you', engaging with you empathically, observing, noticing and wondering, giving me an understanding of your experiences and ensuring you feel truly heard and understood.

Working collaboratively, we will help you find the answers that are within yourself.

Understanding behaviours...

Therapy can help you recognise and acknowledge your strengths: qualities that will help you cope more effectively through your life journey.

It can also help you identify negative thought processes and behaviour patterns that may be sabotaging relationships and opportunities, holding you back or see you repeating the same processes again and again, preventing you from achieving a content and fulfilling life. As a therapist, being aware of your own material enables you to practice in the client's best interests.

Finding solutions...

As our bodies hold on to the emotional distress of negative thoughts or traumatic experiences, (consciously or unconsciously) these can often be experienced in the form of anxiety, illness and disease (dis-ease).

As therapist and client, together we can explore the origin of these patterns providing you with the tools, knowledge and understanding to break free from these destructive behaviours and improve your life.

When you do finally release these old, unresolved negative emotions and behaviours, positive thinking and growth are allowed to blossom and develop enabling you to become the best version of yourself you want to be.
