Our Work Together

"Knowing yourself is the beginning of all the wisdom."

-Aristotle

In therapy, you are always in control. I respect your autonomy and empower you to decide what to bring to each session. You also have the freedom to end our work together whenever you feel ready.

I will provide you with a safe and dependable relationship, during which time I will offer you my full and uninterrupted attention, listening to your concerns, thoughts and feelings. I will offer you a genuine, empathic and non-judgemental space.

As an integratively trained therapist, I use a person-centred approach to tailor my methods to best suit your unique needs, drawing on a range of skills to provide the most effective therapy for you as an individual.

Therapy, whilst offering the opportunity for change, can be an emotionally challenging experience. In our work together you may face versions of yourself or others that you may not like, including me as your therapist. This is not uncommon and often allows us to explore those parts of ourselves and others that we may struggle to understand and accept within the safe space of our counselling relationship. As therapist and client, we can explore these thoughts and feelings together, understanding their origins and where they belong and above all, freeing you from the constraints they may represent.

It is important in the counselling room that you feel able to talk about and explore whatever is on your mind: whatever is troubling you. Therefore, I offer a confidential service.

Some frequently asked questions...

How do I know if you are the right counsellor for me?

After an initial informal discussion on the phone, if you feel you would like to come along and meet me we will book an appointment.

It gives us both the opportunity to experience what it feels like to be in each other's company and for you to ask any questions. In brief, you may like to tell me what brings you to counselling at this time in your life.

You may either choose to make a further appointment to start counselling or go away and think about it.

Committing to counselling is a big decision so it is important to feel comfortable with the therapist. It is important to find someone you feel you can trust: trust your instincts! Sometimes you may need to see several therapists before you find the one that suits you.

It is also very important to choose a counsellor who works to a professional code of practice and receives clinical supervision.

What happens if I decide I would like to start counselling with you?

If you decide to proceed with counselling with me, we will discuss the right way forward for you, be that face to face, remotely or Walk and Talk. We will agree a day and time on which to meet. Usually, therapy is most effective when engaged in on a weekly basis, however, depending on your individual circumstances and the depth of work required, there can be some flexibility to this. We can decide this together and review our work together, regularly. I offer a full 60 minute session.

Are you monitored as a professional?

Yes, as an ethically practising counsellor I am obliged to attend regular counselling supervision with a qualified and practising clinical supervisor. I am a member of and abide by the Ethical Framework of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) which requires me to meet my supervisor on a regular monthly basis to ensure my work is ethical and beneficent.

What is a clinical supervisor?

A clinical supervisor is a qualified counsellor/psychotherapist in practice who is registered and abides by a professional body and ethics. It is a requirement of ethical practice that all practitioners must attend monthly supervision where the supervisor monitors practice and ensures every counsellor is practising ethically and beneficently in clients best interests. This is set down in the Ethical Framework of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), with whom I and my supervisor are registered.

How do I know you will keep what I say confidential?

I am bound by the Ethical Framework of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) to uphold the practice of client confidentiality.
